Amorous Couple "Maithuna"
10th-13th centuries
Sandstone
This couple, fashioned from a monolith of pinkish sandstone, formed part of the sculptural decoration of a Hindu temple. Traditional features of Indian art and tribhanga (figures with a triple bend in the body), reflecting the movements of ancient Indian dancing, are combined with relatively realistic and poetic interpretations of images, full of spirituality and sensual beauty.
